We find ourselves Outstanding in the field…with Jim Denevan and friends.
Two World class winemakers..Mark Kent from South Africa and Bill Hardy – the current hardy at the head of the Australian wine dynasty.
Re-visits with award winning chef Melissa Craig and the winemaking gang on Summerland’s Bottleneck Drive.
Plus all the info on the party of the summer at Mission Hill plus of course The Wine Diva reviews the Hardy wines.
THE SHOW
Jim Denevan is at the head of a movement. His book and organization called Outstanding in the Field is driven by the desire for all of us to recognize our local farmers and fishermen and artisans, to know where our food comes from and because he’s not just a chef and author but an artist..he creates dining events right in the fields..100’s of chairs curving down a beach, between rows of corn.
He’s bringing his bus “Outstanding” to Vancouver’s UBC Farms and North Arms Farms in Pemberton..July 18th and July 19th.
Two segments here..one with Jim to open the show and a second with Mark Bomford
Program Coordinator UBC Farm.
And Jordan Sturdy..North Arm Farms.
A re-visit with Gold Medal Plates 2008 winner Melissa Craig from Bearfoot Bistro in Whistler BC. We cover her starting point at Sooke Harbor House to being named Executive Chef at one of Canada’s best restaurants and being named best chef in Canada. She’s currently featured in the White Spot ads.
Mark Kent is the winemaker at South Africa’s Boekenhoutskloof (Boken-hoots-cloff).
He makes perhaps the best Syrah in SA but also gives us Porcupine Ridge, Wolftrap and killer blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Cabernet and Viognier called Chocolate Block Western Cape.
If you love finding surprises in the world of wine..here’s one. Check out mark’s interview.
HOUR TWO
Bill Hardy
A true living legend; the fifth generation winemaker turned brand ambassador has become almost as iconic in Aussie wine circles as his great great grandfather Thomas Hardy.
Bill gives us a brief history of the family..one of the first to plant grapes in Oz, then we talk about his current wines and Australia’s place in the world of Wine.
Daenna Van Mulligen – The Wine Diva reviews the latest pours from Hardys wines.

July 11th..at Mission Hill Family Estate winery in Westbank/West Kelowna..The Okanagan Symphony again throws the party of the summer.
It’s the annual Midsummer Magic fundraiser with an auction list unlike any other you’ll see.
www.okanagansymphonymidsummergala.ca
It will be my pleasure to host the evening alongside Rosemary Thompson musical director and conductor.
It’s also the last official function for executive chef Michael Allemeier before he heads for SAIT in Calgary.
Check out the auction items, including a wild list of wines, on the website and listen in as one of the organizers Judy Burns runs the whole thing down.
And finally..we revisit Bottleneck Drive..
Because the Dept of Highways or some such body hasn’t yet let them put up their highway sign. I thought I’d revisit some of the wineries up Bottleneck Drive..just south of Summerland.
For the complete list of wineries up that road..check out
We talk to reps from Dirty Laundry, 8th Generation, Thornhaven and Vinegar Works
Enjoy!
