Mulligan Stew May 5th 2018-Shakey Graves, Donovan Woods Interviews

hello

It’s the last Stew on Roundhouse Radio.  At this point no one knows what will happen next.

It was a wild ride.

HOWEVER, Mulligan Stew carries on.

It’s in its 22nd year on CKUA Radio.  Province wide in Alberta .

Every Saturday 5-7PM Mtn (4-6 Pacific)

Streamed on the CKUA App. And on the website www.ckua.com

And now it’s a PODCAST

Mulligan Stew  Music.Film.Food.Wine on Spotify, Google Play Music and iTunes.

Our Special Guests this week both have brand new albums

Shakey Graves – Can’t Wake Up.  His 5th in 7 years.  From a One man Band with a suitcase to headliner. Shakey delivers!!

Donovan Woods – Establishing himself as a consummate singer/songwriter.  Doesn’t seek fame just an audience to call his own.

Album is called Both Ways.

From The Austin Chronicle

In December, Shakey Graves tweeted, “Next album. New sound. Sell your suspenders.”

Droll, but even then it was hard to imagine Austin son Alejandro Rose-Garcia forgoing the sound that collages his growing body of work. Out of his trademark suitcase kick-drum, 2011 debut Roll the Bones tumbled forth bedroom intimacy and playfulness, an old-timey, distinctly Southwestern collusion of acoustica – guitar, banjo, harmonica, hand claps – and even a telling Springsteen cover, ‘billy bomp “I’m on Fire.” That began buzz throughout his hometown but quick.

The Donor Blues EP (2012) retained said stripped folk jig, but national breakout And the War Came two years later offered full-band bravado and high-watt jams, launching Shakey Graves beyond a homegrown hero turned FridayNight Lights cult TV actor. Third proper full-length Can’t Wake Up now completes his metamorphosis into an exceptional songwriter whose songs manifest into cinematic novellas. Characters living therein and their actions come to life in dreamy detail.”

Couldn’t have said it better.

Alejandro began his music career with a buskers mentality on stage – without ever really busking out on the streets.

His was a solo act with a suitcase for a drumkit. Then a 3 piece and now a full band backs him up.

In 2015 he was named Best Emerging Artist at the Americana Music Awards.

Now, here he is 5 albums in 7 years. The latest –just released – is Can’t Wake Up. It’s a heady mix of folk, blues, rock and roots.

He’s an actor, singer/songwriter and an artist. He designed the montage for the album cover.

His Father was a film set designer so you know his stage show will be special.

He IS coming our way..Massey Hall Toronto is sold out, as is Montreal show. He’s at Regina Folk Festival in August, which is the heart of the festival season in the West.

So…who knows!

He may he Shakey but he’s also a  charming soul.

Donovan Woods.

We welcome back an old friend – Canadian born, Nashville based singer/songwriter Donovan Woods and his new album  Both Ways.

Donovan can’t be called a country singer but he has country fans. He’s a folkie who shows up at Jazz festivals.

Even though he’s a really fine performer I think it’s his songwriting that will eventually make him a star.

Frankly, as he admits in this interview, stardom is not exactly what he’s looking for.
“Just a 1000 people in a room”  With hopefully a  series of ever-expanding rooms.

Both Ways ought to do the trick.

He’s just passed through the West but I do believe DW will be back before the summer is over.

Both RAW interviews will find their way onto the Mulligan Stew Podcast.

Enjoy!

Mulligan Stew Dec 23rd 2017- Christmas in the Round year Three!

hello

It’s fair to say that Christmas is the most traditional season of the year.

Mulligan Stew has its own tradition we’d like to share with you.

It all started at CBC Vancouver in the late 70s with Producer Susan Englebert.

I was hosting a weekly show called The Great Canadian Goldrush and Susan brought together several of our artist friends to sing Christmas songs and tell Christmas tales.

Shari Ulrich, Roy Forbes, Terry Frewer were all part of those shows.

The show became a tradition – year after year.

Then life happened.  Our friend Susan lost a battle with cancer, Goldrush was canceled and we all moved on.

It wasn’t until I signed on with Roundhouse Radio in Vancouver that the idea of Christmas in the Round started to take shape.

Finally, I had a great mix.

Artists that were attracted to Roundhouse Radio’s support of music and the arts.

And a real working studio..plus a lobby that doubled as a stage. Perfect!!

This is now Year Three of Christmas in the Round.

Shari Ulrich is still part of the group.

( Roy Forbes joined us last year)

This year the lineup is strong. Everyone on the stage had an amazing year. Recording, touring, co-writing and making new friends.

Barney Bentall – had just come off the road with Cariboo Express. Released a fine new album The Drifter and the Preacher and was about to tour coast-to-coast in early 2018 with the  Jim Cuddy Band.

Shari Ulrich – on the road with Barney, playing with other artists, forming a trio with her daughter Julia and fellow Cariboo Expresser  Kirby Barber, who’s also with us this year.

(Julia recorded and mixed this hour)

Jim Byrnes- host of Byrnes Blues with a well-earned reputation as a singular performer, who proudly shows his St Louis roots in every song.

He too has a new album coming out in Feb. – Long Hot Summer Days.

Bill Henderson – Leader, writer, vocalist, and guitarist of Chilliwack. Mentor to many of today’s new artists. Producer and picker.

Craig Northey – Original member of The Odds. Invaluable session man, co-writer, and part of perhaps the best backing band in the Country.

You may notice in the group photo that he’s leaning on a crutch. That’s because he BROKE his ankle playing hockey 2 weeks before this session and he still came to play.

He’s a gamer. A lifer.

Geoff Hicks – Plays drums with EVERYONE – Colin James, Barney, never mind..it’s way too many to mention

Rob Becker – Ditto. Need a great bass player? Start in the B’s with Becker.  Plays with Barney a lot.

They all have Christmas songs and stories and a tradition to carry on.

Many thanks to Cory Price, Julia Graff, Monique McQueen, Alex Rodgerson, Don Shafer, Margaret Garrison, Dave Dhillon, Gabe Reinarz, Julian Anton, Scott Elliott and Duke, Natalie Pitt.

Many thanks to our singers and pickers

And as always Corey Wood and MEG – The Home Team

This show is dedicated to the memory of Susan Englebert

Episode 10: New Recording Studios

hello

A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart. I am alone, and feel the charm of existence in this spot, which was created for the bliss of souls like mine. I am so happy, my dear friend, so absorbed in the exquisite sense of mere tranquil existence, that I neglect my talents. I should be incapable of drawing a single stroke at the present moment; and yet I feel that I never was a greater artist than now.

hello

Hello all:

Saturdays guest is Liam Titcomb.

I spent a lifetime hanging out with and travelling the roads with his father Brent..many MANY years ago, when he was a member of 3’s a Crowd.
Liam has been signed to Nettwerk Records and has just released a four song  EP called Love Don’t Let Me Down.
Liam seems to have learned the art of songwriting and performing very well..because these four songs appear to be just the tip of the iceberg.
Thus, we’re pleased to welcome Liam back to CKUA in our second hour.

hello

We are slowly updating , inputting and reconciling our archives…please check back as we re-build our database of past playlists

This week on Mulligan Stew:

Colin James
has worn many hats during his long and storied career. When Colin first hit the scene a quarter century ago, he became an instant rock guitar hero, mentored by the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan. Since then, this iconic Canadian has topped the charts as a pop vocalist, recorded an acclaimed blues album and led the swing revival with his Little Big Band, which he both fronted and produced. He has performed for the Queen, sold multi-platinum many times over and continues to sell out shows coast to coast.  Along the way, he’s written memorable hit songs and given us distinctive covers of timeless classics with his newest album teasing that the best is still yet to come.
This six-time Juno Award winner has come full circle with his latest album, aptly titled Fifteen.  On the verge of 25 years since the release of his debut, this is Colin’s 15th release and it takes this Saskatchewan artist back to his full-blooded rock roots.
Colin James talks with host Terry David Mulligan about working on Fifteen with Ron Sexsmith, Tom Wilson, and Alan Doyle on the next Mulligan Stew, Saturday, June 16 at 7pm.
